Dave Cooke was born in Windsor, Ontario where he graduated from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Social Work in 1975. He practiced social work at the Essex County Children’s Aid Society until he was elected as the New Democrat MPP for the riding of Windsor-Riverside in 1977. He served in the legislature until February 1997 when he resigned. While in the legislature he was the critic for the NDP for the Ministries of Colleges and Universities, Health, Housing and Finance. Dave was also appointed Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs and later served as Government Houseleader, and Chair of Management Board, and was also appointed Minister of Education and Training. After leaving the Legislature Dave co-chaired the Education Improvement Commission and the Taskforce on Effective Schools.
Dave has previously served on the Windsor Board Of Education; the Board of the Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education based in Vancouver; on the Board of Governors for Seneca College, including as Chair for 2004-2006, on the Board of Governors for the University of Windsor from 2001-2009 and including as Chair from 2007-2009; as an Honorary Director for the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County including co-chair of the Capital Campaign for the organization and as a member of the TVO Provincial Affairs political panel.
Dave presently is a member of the Board of the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office; a member of the Board of the Windsor-Essex Development Commission and a member of the Board of Family Service Windsor-Essex.
