LHIN INVESTS $450,000 TO REDUCE WAIT TIMES AT HÔTEL-DIEU GRACE HOSPITAL51 viewsThe Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network (ESC LHIN) is working to reduce the amount of time people spend waiting in Emergency Departments (EDs) by investing $450,000 into a new 24/7 Psychiatric Assessment Team at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital (HDGH).
The combination of a high volume of mental health patients presenting in the ED, and relative shortage of psychiatrists has resulted in excessive ED wait times. The new team, staffed by nurses and social workers within the ED, will improve the patient experience for mental health consumers by providing assessments, diverting patients to appropriate community-based services, linking unattached patients with primary care services, and streamlining the admission processes for consumers who require a hospital stay in an in-patient bed.
While the investment is targeted at providing services to mental health consumers, the improved flow in the ED will free up staff time to focus on acute medical patients and produce overall shorter ED wait times.
The ESC LHIN has worked closely with HDGH staff including, Chief of Emergency, Chief of Psychiatry, Director of Mental Health Services, and Director of Emergency Department/Medicine, to develop the team as a solution to this issue, improving the care mental health consumers receive and improving ED Wait Times.
A portion of the $450,000 in funding will be directed to provide minor renovations to the inpatient unit to help facilitate improved utilization of current beds and enhance patient flow.
